Will NCAA Soften Its Stand On Sports Betting?

NCAA has stood firmly against the legalization of sports betting in the US. It has been at the forefront of the campaign against sports gambling.

In its latest statement, NCCA has demonstrated they are still not very receptive of the new regulations.

Naima Stevenson Starks, the NCAA’s deputy general counsel said, “The NCAA has always been attentive to gambling despite our ‘Don’t bet on it’ stance that the association has had.”

“Very few student-athletes who wager on sports in college begin that activity during their college years. A lot of them on the men’s side that is becoming their entry point into gambling. It used to be card playing, but more and more it’s becoming sports wagering” added Tom Paskus, the NCAA principal research scientist.

The US supreme court legalized sports betting last year, allowing states to regulate sports gambling in their respective jurisdictions.

Following the decision, NCAA had said that they would not be hosting any tournament in the states that have legalized sports betting. However, earlier in May, NCAA lifted the ban and revised its policy concerning hosting of tournaments and sports events in states that have legalized sports betting. With more and more US states legalizing sports betting – over ten so far – it would not have been practical for NCAA to continue avoiding states which allow sports betting.

Earlier, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), had also sought to ban athletes from placing wagers on sports events.

According to the association, allowing athletes to place bets on sports events could give rise to corruption and malpractices, including match-fixing in major college level sports events.
